Tips for Planning a Successful Vegetable Garden in San Diego

soil preparationPlanning a vegetable garden in San Diego can be a simple process, and starting in February is a smart move. Follow these steps:

  • Choose an area in your landscape that receives plenty of sun. Ensure that the location doesn’t have grass (or remove the grass).
  • Decide whether it will be an in-ground or raised bed vegetable garden
  • Prepare the soil: Supplement native soil with organic compost soil amendment
  • Design it so that it’s easy and convenient to access
  • Select plants
  • Choose companion plants
  • Fertilize: The three most essential nutrients to grow healthy plants are N (Nitrogen)-P (Phosphorous) – K (Potassium)
  • Pest management: Consider non-toxic, organic methods, like hand picking and blasting them off with water
  • Mulch!

More Valuable Tips for Gardening in February

landscape tips FebruaryContinue to plant cool-season vegetables, such as broccoli, beets, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, kale, endive, lettuce, turnips, potatoes (white) radishes, and rutabagas.

Plant Lillies of the Valley, Chinese magnolias, gerberas, and gladioli.

February is an excellent time to plant California Native plants.

The cooler weather makes it an excellent time to plant cool-season lawns like tall and dwarf fescue lawns.

Add winter color to your landscape by planting aloes. They can shoot spikes of orange, blazing red, or gold flowers from January through April.

Feed your citrus trees. Regularly fertilizing them with fertilizer high in nitrogen can help them produce a bounty of fruit. Citrus trees don’t need fertilizer with high concentrations of potassium and phosphorus.

You can still grow a backyard orchard of apple and stone fruit trees. Some excellent options for San Diego County include Dorset Golden Apples, Red Baron Peach, Burgundy Plum, and Arctic Star Nectarines.

Don’t let diseases and pests take control. Get the upper hand and control them by cleaning up old tomato vines and spent summer and winter crops.

February Watering Needs

Irrigation: You’ll want to water less frequently, so set your irrigation time to water less. During the time of lots or rain, turn off the irrigation system. For newly planted plants with immature root systems, water regularly but be sure to add a 3 to 4-inch layer of mulch to help conserve moisture.

Collect rainwater: We receive limited rainfall in San Diego, so stay proactive and focus on water conservation. You can also redirect water from gutters to empty into your garden instead of storm drains. Consider a rain garden.

Follow your local watering restrictions and guidelines.

Keep weeding your landscape. You can keep weeds at bay using pre-emergent, which can help keep your landscape free of weeds in spring and summer.
