To Do List for the Garden in November: San Diego Edition
November is here! Shorter days, longer nights, and cooler weather make it an ideal time to refresh your edible gardens and ornamental plants in the landscape. November typically marks the start of the rainy season in San Diego County, too, so be sure to get out there and finish your planting. We may experience Santa Ana conditions from time to time, so be mindful of your landscape's watering needs.
Tree Care
It’s a good time to take care of your trees before the November rain starts. If you’ve planted young trees, ensure they are well-staked. You’ll also want to prune dense trees. Pruning trees is good for them — it can prevent disease, encourage fruit production, and enhance their appearance.
Speaking of trees. Several varieties of citrus can be harvested this month. Of course, lemon and lime trees can be harvested throughout the year. Additionally, some varieties of mandarins, such as Satsuma and Mandarin oranges, ripen this month and will continue to ripen through winter and early spring. Navel oranges may also be ripe enough to pick this time of year.
Roses Care
Roses start to bloom again in the fall. As they do, they begin to form seed heads, known as rose hips. Rose hips are lovely, adding bright red and orange color to your garden.
Grow an Edible Garden
aSunny, cool weather provides ideal conditions for planting an edible garden that should be ready for harvest come Thanksgiving.
- Tender lettuce
- Radishes
- Peas
- Carrots
- Beets
- Spinach
- Scallions
- Broccoli
- Garlic
November is also an excellent time of year to plant strawberries. Look for varieties that are suited to our mild climate, like Sequoia, Seascape, and Chandler strawberries.
Grow an Herb Garden
Nothing beats homegrown herbs. November’s weather is great for growing a good number of herbs, such as:
- Parsley
- Thyme
- Rosemary
- Culinary Sages
- Dill
- Fennel
- Winter Savory
Lawn Care Needs
- Overseed your warm-season lawn
- Feed cool-season lawns, such as tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and ryegrass
- Avoid feeding warm-season lawns
- Repair brown spots
