Top Fall Vegetables You Can Grow in San Diego
Fall is coming up quickly. With a bit of planning, you can grow a variety of fall vegetables in San Diego so you can enjoy a bounty come winter. So, what are the top fall vegetables to grow in Vista, Carlsbad, Del Mar, and other regions in San Diego?
When to Start a Fall Vegetable Garden in San Diego
One of the great things about the cooler season is that you can grow varieties you wouldn’t usually get to grow during the summertime. If you start to sow seeds from August to early September, you can grow vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, greens, kale, lettuce, and even some summer squash, such as zucchini. You can also grow other crops, such as radishes, onions, garlic, potatoes, artichokes, and asparagus, in USDA Zones 9 and 10.
These vegetables will thrive in your soil until the soil drops below 55 degrees, typically from late October to early November. Once soil temperatures dip below 55 degrees, the plants will stop growing, so be sure to pick any ripe veggies before the cold damages them. The good news is that some of these crops are easy to grow, so if you’re a beginner, try planting winter greens, lettuce, kale, arugula, or spinach.
Have limited garden space? You can try purchasing transplants of cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, or broccoli as they won’t take up too much space. Most of all, grow what you like to eat!
