Spring Wake-Up: April Landscape Tips for San Diego County
Spring is here, and the weather is warming up. Didn’t plant anything in March? It’s ok! You still have time to plant flowering trees, shrubs, ground covers, and more. We’ll cover what to do in your San Diego County landscape in April in this week’s blog.
April landscape maintenance includes yard upkeep, removing weeds, reseeding thin or bare lawns, fertilizing, and planting as much as you can!
What to Plant in April
April is prime planting season. Wondering what to plant—from vegetables to roses? Read on to discover what works best for your garden.
Vegetables
Growing vegetables at home, or even in a space on your commercial property, means you can pick fresh, tasty veggies and know exactly how they were handled!
April is a good time to plant warm-season crops, such as:
- Tomatoes

- Peppers
- Squash
- Cucumbers
- Melons
- Okra
You can plant heat-loving herbs, too, such as:
- Mint
- Basil
- Oregano
- Thyme
- Parsley
- Rosemary
You can also continue to plant cool-season crops, such as:
- Beets
- Carrots
- Chives
- Celery
- Lettuce
- Leeks
- Green Onions
- Parsley
- Parsnips
It’s also a good time to plant begonias and dahlias!
Essential Landscape Tasks for April
Harvest rain: With average rainfall totals so low in San Diego County, every drop of rain counts. Rain barrels are an easy and effective way to collect and store water, so it pays to have a few on your property. Another way to harvest rain is to redirect water from gutters that flow into storm drains into your garden instead.
Reset your irrigation system: The weather is warming up, so you may need to water more frequently. Adjust your timer as needed if rainfall is adequate.
Check irrigation system: Fix clogs, broken sprinklers, and adjust spray heads.
Apply a fresh layer of organic mulch to help conserve water.
Start creating a plan for how you will save water. Westturf can upgrade your existing irrigation system with the latest technology.
Keep an eye on mulch in your landscape and maintain a 2–4-inch blanket to retain moisture, moderate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
Pest Management
Watch out for pests in your landscape. Pests can destroy lawns, kill plants, and even ruin hardscapes. Signs of pest activity in your landscape include sticky residue, curled, twisted, or discolored leaves, patches of dead grass, and rapid browning. If you notice these signs, inspect affected areas closely, remove pests by hand or with appropriate treatments, and monitor your landscape regularly for recurring problems.
Common landscape pests to watch out for:
- Mosquitos
- Spiders
- Fleas
- Ants
- Snails and slugs
- Aphids
- Thrips
- Scale
- Rats and mice
- Gophers
- Powdery mildew
- Weeds!
