Just like that, it’s March and we’re about to get into Spring mode! We’re pretty lucky to have such great weather in San Diego, and the month of March is no exception. March happens to be another one of the prime planting months in our region. Early blooming flowers like daffodils and freesias are making an appearance, but so are weeds, especially if you haven’t been keeping them at bay during winter.spring landscape tips

With spring comes the busiest time of the year for planting. It’s a good time to plant a variety of plants, such as trees, shrubs, vegetables, citrus, and more. We’ll cover more in our San Diego landscaping tips for March.

 

Gardening Tips for Spring: What to Plant

plant rosesStop by your local nursery and select a rose plant. March is the month when you’ll see the flowers. So, stop by and smell the roses!

Plant azaleas. Azaleas bloom beautiful, colorful flowers in shades of pink, yellow, orange, red, and white. March is their prime bloom time, and these flowers also happen to grow best when they are in bloom!

Plant avocado tree Plant avocado and citrus trees. Now’s a good time to give citrus and avocado trees the time to get established before winter. Provide your trees with good drainage. Be sure to choose varieties that are right for your area.

  • Avocado tree varieties you can grow in San Diego County include Hass, Fuerte, and Bacon.
  • Citrus tree varieties that grow well in San Diego County include Washington Navel and Valencia oranges, Meyer, Eureka, and Pink Lemonade lemons. Bearss limes, Star Ruby, Oroblanco, and Melogold grapefruits.

March Lawn Care Tips in San Diego

March San Diego lawn care tipsFertilize: Grasses start to wake up from their dormancy in March, so it’s a good time to fertilize with high-nitrogen, low-phosphorous fertilizer. It’s a good idea to use fertilizer with pre-mergence weed control.

Mowing: If you have cool seasons grasses, like fescue, bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass, they’re growing at a fast pace this time of the year, so, mow more often.

  • Tip: cut perennial ryegrass and bluegrass at about 2 inches. Tall fescue should be cut at about 2 to 3-inches.

March Irrigation for San Diego County Gardens

Reset your irrigation timer: Once the weather starts to warm up and rains less often, water more frequently. If rainfall is persistent, adjust accordingly.

Keep roses well hydrated: apply at least one inch of water, twice a week.

Decrease how often you water your California native plants that don’t take summer water.

Make a plan to save water: Being waterwise in Southern California is a must. Make a smart water choice. Rain gardens, rain collection, and installing or retrofitting your irrigation system with updated technology can help you save water.
