Spring is Here! Things to Do in Your Garden
Just like that, spring is here — what an exciting time to be a landscaper/gardener! After all, there are LOTS of amazing things you can do in your garden, and, yes, you might have to get your hands dirty, but that’s all a part of the fun, isn’t it?
What to Plant in March
March is a great time to plant trees that provide delicious and nutritious food, like citrus and avocado trees. Planting these type of trees now gives them the opportunity to get established before the cooler winter temperatures slow down their growth.
Citrus trees
Below are some of the best citrus tree varieties for San Diego County
- Oranges: Valencia and Washington Navel
- Lemons: Improved Meyer and Eureka
- Grapefruit: Oroblanco and Melogold
- Limes: Bearss and Mexican
- Mandarins: Owari Satsuma and Kinnow
Avocado trees
March is an excellent time to plant an avocado tree or two in San Diego. The danger of frost has passed and soil is warming up, so here are a few avocado tree recommendations for your garden in San Diego County.
- Hass
- Reed
- Fuerte
- Lamb Hass
- Bacon
- Gwen/GEM
Start an Herb Garden
Picking herbs from your garden is quite satisfying. When you’ve got an herb garden within arm’s reach, you can enjoy fresh herbs all year long.
Here are some of your best herb options to plant in March and April:
- Basil
- Oregano
- Thyme
- Rosemary
- Sage
- Marjoram
Tip: Harvest herbs frequently to prevent them from flowering (bolting).
Prepare Your Landscape for the Remainder of the Year
Now that we’re about to experience wonderful springtime weather, it’s a great time to prepare your landscape before the heat of the summer rolls in. One task you’ll want to be sure to do is to clean your tools and maintain them. Regular maintenance ensures that tools remain in good condition and they’ll last longer, too. So, you’ll want to sharpen them and clean and sterilize them, especially if you’ve used them to prune diseased branches.
Start a compost bin
It’s an excellent time to get started on a compost bin. By beginning the process, you’ll be on your way to creating nutrient-rich soil for free. You can create compost by using kitchen scraps, yard clippings, and other ingredients. You’ll want to include a mix of carbon and nitrogen ingredients. An optimal ration will consist of 3 to 3 parts of carbon matter to 1 p[art nitrogen matter. We’ll break down some of the ingredients that you can use to create carbon and nitrogen sources below.
Carbon sources: Woody branches, dead leaves, bark dust, sawdust, shredded office paper, cardboard, coffee filters, brown paper bags, straw, and the wood ash you can college from your fireplace or wood stove.
Nitrogen sources: Fruit and vegetable scraps, freshly cut grass clippings, green plant trimmings, eggshells, used coffee grounds, kelp, and seaweed.

Early spring is an ideal time of year to create a space for tranquility, and one great way to do that is by incorporating aspects of a Zen design into your space. If you have the space in your yard, pick an area that is well suited for meditating. It could be a narrow side yard or an out-of-the-way corner, either way, you’ll want to find a nice location that’s comfortable and suitable so that you can chill and meditate.
Elements of a Zen garden can include things, such as:
- Rocks
- Gravel
- Screening
- Statues
- Pathways
- Stone bench
- Water features
- Lighting
- Plants
