What is Defensible Space: A Simple Guide for San Diego Property Owners
Creating a Buffer Zone: Weed Abatement and More
Wildfire in San Diego County is an unfortunate fact of life in our region. With wildfire season stretching longer into each year, creating a defensible zone on your property is a must. When we talk about a defensible zone, we’re talking about creating a buffer zone between a structure and surrounding vegetation. Creating the buffer zone means clearing weeds and brush to slow the spread of wildfire.

Defensible Space: Management Zones
You’ll need to create three distinct management zones to create an effective buffer on your property. The three management zones (covered below) will extend outward from your structure, with the best buffer zone extending out at least 100 feet from any structure.
The standard defensible space zones are as follows:
Ember-Resistant Zone (0 - 5 feet)
The first five feet from your structure is the most important, which is why the ember-resistant zone is the most critical of all defensible space zones. The goal is to prevent embers from igniting the structure. Fire authorities advise removing all flammable plants and clearing debris. Hardscapes, such as concrete, pavers, and gravel are recommended.
To do:
- Use hardscape rather than combustible bark or mulch
- Remove all dead and dying plants from roofs, gutters, stairways, walkways, etc.
- Replace combustible gates, fences, etc. and replace them with non-combustible alternatives
Intermediate Green Zone (5 – 30 feet)
This zone is known as the “lean, clean, and green zone.” The focus in this zone is weed abatement, including the removal of dead plants, grass, and, of course, weeds. Trees, especially those with low branches, should be heavily pruned. Low branches act as “ladder fuels,” so they should be pruned and spaced widely apart.
To do:
- Remove all dead plants, weeds, and grass
- Remove dry or dead leaves and pine needles
- Regularly trim trees to keep branches at least 10 feet from other trees
Extended Reduced Fuel Zone (30 – 100 feet)
The goal is to continue to reduce potential fire fuels within 100 feet of your property line. You can still have natural vegetation in this zone, but grass should be mowed to a low height. Larger trees should be spaced out so that their canopies do not touch.
To do:
- Mow or cut annual grass down to 4-inches max.
- Create a horizontal space between trees and shrubs
- Create a vertical space between trees, shrubs, and grass
- Remove needles, leaves, twigs, bark, pinecones, fallen leaves, and small branches
Valuable Tips for Clearing Weeds
Mow before 10 a.m. Do not mow on hot or windy days- During times of drought and when watering less, remove all dead or dying vegetation
- Schedule commercial weed abatement service at least 2 to 4 times a year
- Spring: Pre-emergent treatment
- Summer: Post-emergent treatment
- Fall: Pre-emergent treatment
- Winter: Year-round maintenance, including weed abatement
Why Defensible Zones Matter
Weed abatement is an ideal way to start creating a fire defensible zone. One of the most significant reasons why is because most structures lost to wildfires are ignited due to flying embers that land near the structure.
- Slows fire progression
- Stops ember ignition
- It weakens radiant heat
- Helps protect firefighters
