Preparing Common Areas for El Niño
Recent data suggests a potentially very strong El Niño season is on the way. So, what does this mean for our region? Residential and commercial property owners should take precautions and prepare their property for the possibility of heavy rain and flooding.
With so much rain expected, you’ll want to prevent water from pooling around your walls, because over time, it can damage your building’s foundation. It’s also wise to clear all yard drains, gutters, and grade the soil away from the foundation.
Tree and plant care:
Fall is the time to act. Here are some things you can do to prepare your landscape:
Trim trees and roots: Trim roots that are growing near underground pipes or sewer lines. This can help prevent storm damage and blockages.
Trim trees: Remove overhanging, dead, or weak or dying tree branches well before the heavy rain and high storm winds start. This can prevent limbs from damaging roofs, cars, or power lines.
Support weak or young trees: Staking weak or young trees can help them stay upright during heavy storms.
Plant cool-season crops: Plant cool-weather crops such as kale, cabbage, and other cool-season crops early. These kinds of crops thrive in wet conditions.
Keep an eye out for pests: Wet conditions typically increase slugs, snails, and fungal diseases.
Erosion control:
Clear drains: To ensure heavy runoff can flow freely, remove leaves, dirt, and debris from exterior landscape drains, ditches, and swales.
Redirect water: Ensure that roof water downspouts discharge at least five feet away from your building’s foundation. You can use extensions or splash blocks to help.
Collect water: Rain barrels are an excellent way to collect all the rainwater we’re expecting. You can capture rainwater by placing a rain barrel under an active downspout. Place it on a stable, level, elevated area close to the garden or plants you want to water.
Use straw wattles and fiber rolls: Straw wattles and fiber rolls can slow runoff, stabilize disturbed areas and slopes, and intercept sediment.
Prepare sandbags: Keep sandbags ready, especially if your property is in a flood zone or low-lying area.
How a Super El Niño Will Affect Your Lawn

Expect the wetter winter and spring to bring a heavier weed year. Applying a pre-emergent is a good line of defense.
Nutrient leaching:
Heavy rainfall can wash nitrogen out of the soil, which can turn your grass yellow and leave it hungry.
Erosion and flooding:
Pooling water can suffocate roots and invite diseases. All that water runoff can carry away topsoil, too. We recommend improving your drainage and fixing any low spots in your landscape.
Mosquitoes:
Empty any standing/pooling water, as it’s a mosquito nursery!
