8 Flowering Vines to Transform Outdoor Areas in San Diego County
Climbing Beauty: Top Vines for San Diego Walls and Fences
Flowering plants play a vital role in creating a welcoming environment in your commercial property. They bring life and transform outdoor areas into places where people can find inspiration and calmness. But what if your property lacks available space for pots and planters? Flowering vines can come to the rescue.
Vines can grow up a pergola, trellis, fence, arbor, or wall, so they’re an excellent choice for adding greenery and beauty to a wide range of outdoor areas.
We are in Zones 9 and 10, so we can plant a wide range of climbing vines. Here are some of our favorite flowering vines that can elevate the outdoor space in your commercial space in San Diego County.
San Diego Blooming Vines for Outdoor Areas
1. Wisteria (Wisteria spp.)
These climbing flowering vines feature long hanging clusters of pea-like flowers. Blooming flowers arrive in hues such as lavender, purple, blue, or white. They’re fast-growing plants and are vigorous in nature, so they need strong support and maintenance. However, with proper care, they will create a dramatic display in any outdoor space in San Diego County.
Height/Spread: 10 to 50 feet long, 4 to 30 feet wide
2. Clematis (Clematis spp.)
When in bloom, you can enjoy a show of deep purple to bright white flowers in your outdoor space. They tend to bloom from early spring to fall. And while most are deciduous, Armand’s clematis is evergreen. These flowering vines can grow along a building, arbor, or trellis.
Height/Spread: 2 to 50 feet tall, 2 to 10 feet wide
3. Honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.)
Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to the intensely fragrant trumpet-shaped flowers of Honeysuckle. Flowers arrive in pink, yellow, or red hues. If you’re looking to cover a space quickly, plant a fast-growing honeysuckle vine.
Height/Spread: 8 to 30 feet tall. 3 to 30 feet wide
4. Mandevilla (Mandevilla spp.)
These fast-growing vines reward your landscape with exotic trumpet-shaped flowers in colors of red, white, pink, or apricot. Mandevilla is an excellent option for adding interest to a courtyard!
Height/Spread: 3 to 15 feet tall, 3 to 6 feet wide
5. Black-Eyed Susan Vine (Thunbergia alata)
Plant these fast-growing vines in your outdoor space and enjoy blooms that are sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. They bloom in colors like yellow, coral, white, and bicolor from summer to fall.
Height/Spread: 3 to 8 feet tall, 1-1/2 to 6 feet wide
6. Passionflower (Passiflora spp.)
There are more than 400 species of Passiflora. Some are considered invasive species, making P. edulis the best bet for San Diego County. The flowers are beneficial to butterflies, and they look like they’re from some other world! These vines grow quickly, so they’re a good option if you’re looking to cover an unsightly fence fast. Pruning will control it and keep it looking healthy.
Height/Spread: 10 to 15 feet, 3 to 5 feet wide
7. Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spp.)
Year-round blooms arrive in clusters featuring bright hues of orange, pink, coral, red, yellow, orange, and sometimes white. They need strong support and regular pruning. You can grow them along a wall to add color to a barren part of your commercial building.
Height/Spread: 2 to 30 feet tall and wide
8. Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides)
Intensely fragrant, Star Jasmine can bloom white star-shaped flowers from late spring all the way through late summer. Plant them in a courtyard or on a wall where people can enjoy and feel inspired by their heavy gardenia-like scent!
Height/Spread: 3 to 20 feet tall, 3 to 6 feet wide
