How to Make a Wreath from Materials in Your Garden
Make a Natural Wreath from Garden Materials
The holidays are here! At Westturf Landscape, we enjoy spending time in our gardens and spreading goodwill to all. With Christmas fast approaching, we thought we’d do a little blog on how to make a wreath from materials in your garden.
A natural, compostable wreath will be fresh, fragrant, and can be a part of your compost pile when it’s expired. Most of all, get creative and make a wreath that reflects your personality.
Here’s how to use garden materials to craft a unique wreath:
Construct a base with vines: You can use a Solandra maxima — Cup of Gold vine as the base of your wreath. They can climb up to 40 feet and the vine is hardy and heavy. Grapevines are another option. Fresh vines are more flexible, so they’re easier to work with but they can get stiff and brittle as they dry. Once dried out, the wreath is ready to decorate.
Gather Evergreens: Fill a bucket halfway with clean water. Use fresh branches, like rosemary, thyme, lavender, pine, holly, or even branches from your Christmas tree.
Gather Accents: You’re creating a natural wreath, so keep it that way by including accents such as seed pods, toyon berries, pinecones, dried flowers, popcorn, or dried peppers.
Time to Construct the Wreath
Once the branches are soaked and fully hydrated, it’s time to construct the wreath. You can assemble everything using twine or kite string.
Here’s what to do:
- Make the bundles
- Plan your design
- Construct the wreath:
- Tie the bundles onto the vine wreath (one by one, at the 2:00 or 3:00 position), just to the right at the middle top.
- Work the bundles all the way around the wreath
- Add the finishing touches to fill into empty spaces
