March Landscape Maintenance Tips for San Diego County
Spring is Just Around the Corner: Prepare Your Landscape
It’s the first week of March, and Spring is ALMOST here. With the arrival of March comes the perfect time to start, refresh, or revitalize your landscape! Yep, it’s March Madness, too, and we’re not talking about college basketball. It’s that time of the year when gardeners are heading into the busiest month since October days.
We may still get a day or two of rain and chill, but for the most part, the weather in March is perfect for tending to your garden. It’s a great time to do some chores, such as planting, fertilizing, pruning, and, of course, keeping weeds at bay. If you’re in an HOA or Apartment community, ask about an irrigation audit to ensure that the irrigation system is in top working order.
Add New Plants in Your Garden
March is an ideal time to fill in the gaps in borders and beds. You’ve got plenty of options in San Diego County. Here are a few suggestions:
‘Bountiful Blue’ Blueberry Bush: Grow your own sweet blueberries and enjoy the look of a bush that adds year-round interest to your landscape. This semi-dwarf shrub grows up to 4 feet tall and wide.
‘Heatwave’ Salvias: Heat-, drought-, and waterwise, this compact plant blooms in shades of pink, lavender, rose, and white. Grows up to two feet tall and attracts hummingbirds, too.
Yucca pallida: These wonderful succulents feature a four-foot tall flower stalks and blue-green leaves, which are edged in yellow-pink.
Root crops: Plant easy-to-grow varieties like beets, carrots, and radishes. Plant them from seeds and watch how quickly these root crops grow. Once planted, mulch and water regularly to encourage well-formed roots.
Tips:
- Applying a high-nitrogen fertilizer to mature fruit trees in your landscape is beneficial.
- Be sure to amend your soil with compost to prepare it for spring planting.
Lawn Care Tips
Now that spring and warmer weather have arrived, set your irrigation system to water in the early morning or late-night hours. By watering between 6pm and 10am, you take advantage of the fact that water loss due to evaporation is lower at those times.

Mowing needs: Grass should start growing faster during this time of the year. Since grass is growing quickly, you’ll want to increase mowing. You don’t want to shock your lawn, so it’s best to remove the top 1/3 of the grass blades. Did the recent rainfall cause the grass to grow very tall? If so, cut it down in stages rather than taking it down all at once.
aren’t sure, you can test it by pushing a screwdriver or another metal rod 6 inches into the ground. If it’s difficult or won’t penetrate, chances are it’s compacted. Lawn aeration improves air and water flow to the roots, and March is an excellent time to aerate.
