Benefits of Adjusting Your Irrigation for Cooler Weather in San Diego County
Fall is here, and winter will be here before we know it. And with the seasonal change comes cooler weather. Of course, we’re in San Diego County, so it’s not like we’re going to have too many days of freezing temperatures. In fact, fall is pleasantly warm with many sunny days. That said, the weather in our area is still cooler than summer. When you couple that with shorter days and longer nights, there’s a need to adjust your irrigation.
Why Reduce Irrigation Frequency and Duration in Fall?
Shorter days and cooler weather mean that the plants in your landscape require less water. With fall in full effect, it’s time to adjust your summer watering schedule so that you don’t waste water and harm your landscape.
We’ll break down the why even further:
Prevents overwatering
Did you know that overwatering your plants can be just as bad as underwatering? It’s true. Cooler weather and shorter days mean that your plants need less water during fall and winter. Overwatering can saturate the soil, which can lead to root rot and other plant diseases, such as mildew and different types of fungal growth. Unnecessary watering can also lead to a higher water bill.
Discourages weeds
Since you’re using less water, we recommend mulching your garden beds. Mulch helps retain moisture and also suppresses weed growth. By adding a fresh layer of mulch in the fall, you benefit your plants and conserve water.
Promotes vigorous growth in spring
Overwatering your plants in winter damages them. By preventing overwatering, you’ll be setting up your plants to grow strong and healthy in spring. With a healthy landscape in place, it will be ready to flourish once the weather starts to heat up.
Conserves water
Readjusting your watering schedule with the needs of the season is good for your pocketbook. After all, you’re saving water and doing all you can to manage your water bill. But there are other benefits, too. For example, by using less water for irrigation, there is less runoff making its way into stormwater systems, which in turn helps improve the water quality in our region.
How to Adjust Your Irrigation System for Fall and Winter
Turn off sprinklers during and after rain: Shut your irrigation system off when rain is in the forecast. Leave it off for at least a week after there has been a significant amount of rainfall.
Gradually reduce watering time: In October, you should start reducing watering time by 10%.
Check soil moisture: You can test the soil by sticking your finger two inches into the ground. If the dirt is still damp, watering should wait. If you have succulents and cacti in your landscape, wait until the soil is completely dry before watering.
Upgrade to a Smart Controller: A smart irrigation timer is an excellent upgrade for your landscape. Smart controllers will automatically adjust your watering schedule based on local weather data. With a smart controller, you remove the guesswork and ensure optimal watering.
