How to Choose the Right Watering System for Your Landscape
Choosing a proper watering system is crucial for the health of the plants in your landscape. Under or over-watering your plants can lead to disease, stress, and even death. Besides plant health, selecting the right watering system can help conserve water and improve property value.
Benefits of a Properly Chosen and Functioning Watering System
- Prevents root rot and disease
- Ensures and optimizes nutrient absorption
- Ensures strong growth
- Minimize water waste
- Helps conserve water resources
- Can help suppress weed growth
What’s the Right Watering System for Your Property
Lawn
Hose-end sprinklers: This type of watering system can work well for a small lawn
Underground sprinklers: This type of watering system is typically attached to a controller and will water both small and large areas more precisely.
Annuals and perennials
Overhead watering: This can cause flowers to droop. It can also cause spotting on flower petals.
Underground sprinklers with pop-up risers: These work well in extensive flower beds. Ensure that the risers are tall enough so that the foliage doesn’t block spray.
Drip-emitter lines: Ideal for beds with closely spaced plants. Use individual emitters for plants that are spaced widely apart.
Vegetables
Vegetables in basins and furrows: Hand water
- Vegetables in flat ground: Use soaker hoses
- Closely spaced vegetables: Install a low-volume system with emitter line
- Widely spaced vegetables: Individual emitters
- Position plants with similar watering needs
- Bigger plants require deeper irrigation than smaller plants or seedlings
- Plants that are flowering or setting fruit will require more water
Groundcovers
Underground sprinklers: Use stationary heads for plantings that are more than a foot tall. Use low-precipitation-rate heads for groundcovers on a slope.
Drip emitters: Suitable for shrubby groundcovers
Drip minisprays: A good option for mass plantings of small groundcovers.
Roses
Roses on level ground: Can use soaker hose
Closely spaced rose bushes: Drip irrigation line works well
Underground sprinklers with flat-head sprayers: Run early in the day to keep leaves dry, which can help prevent disease
Trees and shrubs
Soil basins are ideal to avoid runoff and direct water to roots
Soaker hoses: Can be used for occasional deep watering of established trees
Low-volume systems with emitters or microsprinklers: An efficient method for watering trees and shrubs, especially those on sloping ground
Native and drought-adapted plants
Once established, native and drought-adapted plants will need little to no water.
You can use ooze-type soaker hoses at low pressure
Low-flow drips with manual shut-off valve can also be used
Container plants
Gently hand-water container plants
Saturate the soil in container plants by submerging pots in tubs of water for half-hour
Drip works great for pots
Small pots can be watered two to five minutes several times a day
