Strategies to Reduce Water Use and Save Money
Efficient Irrigation
When wanting to reduce water usage, prioritizing efficient irrigation is a must. Here are some ways to do it:
Drip irrigation system: This is a highly efficient method to deliver water directly to the plant roots. Drip systems minimize water evaporation and runoff as well. Other benefits include reduced risk of diseases and lower maintenance costs compared to traditional sprinkler systems.
Deep watering: By watering deeply and less frequently, you not only reduce water use, but you also encourage deep root growth and make plants more resilient to drought.
Adjust sprinkler systems: Adjusting the sprinkler system on your property can avoid water waste. There’s no need for the sprinklers to water sidewalks and driveways, so by ensuring the spray pattern is correct, you can ensure that the plants receive the water they need to thrive.
Watering during the coldest part of the day is an excellent way to reduce water evaporation caused by the sun and wind.
Avoid overwatering: This may sound simple enough; however, some people overwater more than they should, which causes stress to the plants. Overwatering can also lead to disease.
Utilize the “Cycle and Soak” method: Dividing your watering sessions into shorter periods allows soil to absorb water, therefore preventing runoff.
Plant Selection
By planting the right plants in your landscape, you can significantly minimize water usage. Here in San Diego County, we can start by selecting plants that thrive in dry conditions.
Choose drought-tolerant plants: It’s not a secret: drought-tolerant plants require less water. San Diego’s Mediterranean climate is ideal for growing many varieties, such as sages, agaves, California poppies, bougainvillea, and others.
California native plants: Native plants are adapted to our local conditions, so they require less water than non-natives. Here in San Diego County, we have plenty of attractive options that produce vibrant blooms, including California Lilac, California Fuchsia, and Bush Anemone.
Grouping plants by their watering needs: Ensure efficient watering by creating zones of plants with similar watering requirements.
Mulching
Applying mulch offers numerous benefits, including water conservation. Mulch helps retain moisture, suppresses weeds, improves soil health, and regulates soil temperature.
Use organic mulch: Organic mulch includes things like wood chips and bark. Applying mulch around plants conserves water and keeps weeds at bay.
Other ways to conserve water
- Inspect your irrigation system for leaks and repair them right away. Ask your landscape maintenance for irrigation audits.
- Consider replacing or significantly reducing your lawn size. You can do this with groundcover, drought-tolerant plants, and other landscaping features, such as structural elements, like patios.
- Harvest rainwater. Collected rainwater from rooftops can be used for watering your landscape.
- Don’t use water to clean sidewalks and driveways. Instead, use a broom or blower.
- Adjust your lawnmower to a higher setting. Keeping your grass at about 2-inches can help shade the soil and prevent excess evaporation.
