Mowing needs: Grass should start growing faster during this time of the year. Since grass is growing quickly, you’ll want to increase mowing. You don’t want to shock your lawn, so it’s best to remove the top 1/3 of the grass blades. Did the recent rainfall cause the grass to grow very tall? If so, cut it down in stages rather than taking it down all at once.

Weed Control: Applying a pre-emergent herbicide prevents warm-season weeds from germinating. If there are weeds already on your lawn, apply a post-emergent herbicide, or try the old-school way and hand-pull them.  You can also suppress weeds by spreading mulch around plant beds, trees, and shrubs.

Fertilizing: It’s the right time to apply the first fertilizer of the year, and by doing so, it will support spring growth. If you have a warm-season lawn, such as Zoysia, Bermuda, or St. Augustine, wait to apply until they’re actively growing.

Irrigation: We’ll start to see temperatures rise, so watering 1-2 times a week should be sufficient. For best results, consult with an irrigation specialist.

Aerate: Is your soil compacted? If you aren’t sure, you can test it by pushing a screwdriver or another metal rod 6 inches into the ground. If it’s difficult or won’t penetrate, chances are it’s compacted. Lawn aeration improves air and water flow to the roots, and March is an excellent time to aerate.
